How your CSAT score is worked out.
CSAT (customer satisfaction score) is the share of people who chose a satisfied rating. This calculator counts ratings above the neutral midpoint: 4–5 on a 5-point scale, or 5–7 on a 7-point scale.
It also shows the average rating, a different summary of the same answers. Whichever you report, name the scale and threshold.
A quick example
If 160 of 200 people rate their support chat 4 or 5 on a 5-point scale, CSAT is 160 ÷ 200 × 100 = 80%.
Keep in mind
- Use a scale where a higher number means more satisfied.
- Don’t compare a 5-point CSAT with a 7-point CSAT as if they were the same measure.
- The score describes the people who answered, who may differ from those who didn’t.
Satisfied ratings by scale
The satisfied threshold sits above the neutral middle of the scale.
| Scale | Dissatisfied | Neutral | Satisfied |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 5 | 1–2 | 3 | 4–5 |
| 1 to 7 | 1–3 | 4 | 5–7 |
Getting a CSAT score you can use
- Ask right after the experience.Send it after a purchase, support case or onboarding step, while it’s fresh.
- Ask about one thing.“How satisfied were you with today’s support?” beats a question about everything at once.
- Add one reason question. An optional “What could we do better?” turns a low score into something you can fix.
- Keep the scale and labels stable.Changing the scale or wording breaks comparisons over time.
CSAT Calculator questions
How do you calculate CSAT?
Divide the number of satisfied responses by all responses and multiply by 100. On a 5-point scale, satisfied usually means 4 or 5; on a 7-point scale, 5 to 7.
Is CSAT the same as the average rating?
No. CSAT is the share of satisfied people, while the average rating is the mean of all ratings. This calculator shows both, so name the one you report.
Should I use a 5-point or 7-point scale?
A 5-point scale is quicker to answer and the most common. A 7-point scale gives more detail. Pick one and keep it, because the two scores aren't directly comparable.
When should I send a CSAT survey?
Right after the experience you want to measure, such as a purchase, a support case or an onboarding step, while it's still fresh.
Is my data private?
Yes. The score is worked out in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to Tapzy's servers.
